“Old-Fashioned” Bourbon Cherries

It’s the cherry-on-top for Summer: California-grown Cherries are back at Oliver’s! These tartly sweet, dark red beauties are the perfect healthy snack or dessert all on their own, but there’s so much more cherry goodness to explore. This week, we’ve cherry-picked recipes to really show-off these sumptuous Summer stone fruit at their best, plus stop by for great deals everyday! These cherries are infused with Bourbon Whiskey and the flavors of the classic cocktail for these “old-fashioned” boozy cherries. Add them to cocktails, grown-up ice cream sundaes, or even spiked lemonade!

  • Serves: 1 Batch
  • Prep Time: 1.5 hours

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. California Cherries, washed & pitted/stems removed
  • 4 c. Bourbon Whiskey
  • 1 c. Granulated Sugar
  • 3-4 large strips Fresh Orange Zest
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 4 Whole Cloves
  • 1 Whole Star Anise Pod
  • 2 Sterile Quart Jars w/ Lids

Instructions

  1. Combine bourbon, sugar, orange zest, cinnamon, cloves, and star anise in medium saucepan over medium-low heat, and stir until sugar dissolves. Allow mixture to nearly come to a simmer, then immediately remove from heat; allow syrup to infuse for 1 hour, then remove spices and zest.

  2. Pack cherries into jars, trying not to bruise them, then pour bourbon syrup overtop to cover completely. Cover tightly with lid (seal completely, if using canning equipment), and store in the fridge for up to one year. Use these cherries in cocktails like a classic Old Fashioned, or try them as a boozy topping for grown-up sundaes!
