Since our start, we at Oliver’s have gone out of our way to make sure that our customers get the best savings on the best products, and the culmination of this guiding principle is our Real Everyday Values Flyer, also known as R.E.V. Now you may be thinking, “That’s odd, doesn’t Oliver’s already offer great discounts store-wide in their weekly ad?” And you’d be right, but R.E.V. is so much more than just an ad. R.E.V. is a vehicle through which we seek to honor the promise we’ve made to our customers to provide a variety of products at honest-to-goodness, everyday savings. R.E.V. features more than 200 products from every department, and we work closely with our community of vendors to provide discounts you can’t find anywhere else. Then, because we can’t resist adding a cherry on top, we guarantee those prices for a full three months!

Our Roots

While R.E.V. may be an Oliver’s institution today, it wasn’t always the case – in fact, R.E.V. is actually a relatively recent addition to the Oliver’s brand. At first, R.E.V. was known as “Direct to You” – the original goal of the flyer was to provide exclusive deals thanks to the connections fostered directly between our buyers and vendors, cutting out the middle man and saving the customer a good chunk of change. Its secondary purpose was to promote the more niche specialty items we carried, as they were often either too expensive or too far off the popular radar to flourish by themselves. Unfortunately, we realized “Direct to You” was a bit of a misnomer, given that we still had to go through distributors to get product; with our integrity in mind, the decision was made to change the name to something that instead emphasized the value we were providing for our customers. After a few name changes, we settled on “Real Everyday Values”, and the name stuck. These days, our R.E.V. flyer still contains plenty of specialty products while also featuring many conventional items and pantry staples. This means you get even better deals on the items you use every day as well as items you may only use once in a while!

Our R.E.V. process starts the same day the quarter starts, so while you’re enjoying the fresh deals of a new R.E.V. quarter, we’re already working behind the scenes to put together next quarter’s flyer. This means different things for different people – our buyers will begin reaching out to vendors to see what kind of deals they can get. They often use our R.E.V. flyer as a way of debuting new products as well, since the level of exposure the flyer provides allows them to gauge whether or not a product will succeed long-term. Our buyers will also look for items that are seasonal, which can complicate things particularly with regard to produce. Our produce coordinator has to guarantee that the items he picks can be sold at a consistent price for 90 days, which as you may know is nigh on impossible under normal circumstances. However, when it comes down to the nitty gritty, we’re all about making sure our customers are getting the deals they deserve; if we have to take a small loss to guarantee our R.E.V. products, then we do what we have to do. Every department contributes something unique to the flyer, and every buyer has a slightly different process to how they select their products. Nevertheless, the end result is the same – a great price on a great product for three months.

Keeping all this in mind, while there isn’t a wrong way to shop R.E.V., there are definitely things you can do to make it as easy as possible and take full advantage of the potential savings.

#ChecktheTag

While you’re more than welcome to carry around a R.E.V. flyer with you while you shop, it is significantly easier to simply check the tags. In fact, the easiest way to tell if a product is on any kind of sale is to simply check the tag! We make our R.E.V. tags easy to spot – if it’s on R.E.V., there will be a bright blue tag that say’s “Real Everyday Values” slapped on the shelf to the left of the product! The only time this isn’t true is if the product in question happens to be gluten-free; in that case, while the tag will still call out the product as being a R.E.V. flyer item, it will be purple instead of blue. This will come in very handy when an entire line of products goes in the R.E.V. flyer versus a standalone product – you can see at a glance which items are discounted, what the savings are, and even how long that item will remain discounted! Plus, these tags stay on the shelf for as long as the R.E.V. flyer lasts, so even if you skip the flyer, you can know exactly what’s on sale just by looking.

Case the Joint

We’re referring to actual cases, of course, and case-buys in particular. Fun fact: Did you know that you get an extra 10% off when you buy products by the case? Double fun fact: Did you know that this case disocunt is good for R.E.V. items as well? That’s right – not only do you get your R.E.V. products at a super fantastic discount, you also get a bonus discount for buying by the case! Now, when taking advantage of a double discount, there are still a few things to keep in mind.

First off, the case has to be full, and not only does the case have to be full, but you have to make sure that it’s full of one product only. For instance, if you’re trying to buy blueberry yogurts by the case, you have to make sure that every single yogurt is the same brand AND that they’re all the same kind of blueberry yogurt; even one interloper means we can’t give you the extra 10% off, and that’s no fun for anyone.

Second, make sure the item isn’t already on ad. We’ll occasionally feature an item that’s already on R.E.V. in our weekly ad, either at the same R.E.V. discount or at an even better price. In fact, items in our weekly ad are so steeply discounted, we’d effectively be giving them away if we offered an additional case discount. Like the R.E.V. items, we call out our weekly ads with tags; if you notice an item in the R.E.V. flyer is marked with a yellow tag one week, that may not the time to buy it by the case. Luckily, the weekly ad changes every Wednesday, while R.E.V. prices are good for a full three months! You’ll still have plenty of time to stock up once the ad over.

Finally, use your case buy judiciously. You’ll typically want to pick items that you use frequently and/or that have a long shelf life. For example, if you cook with prepared broth or beans regularly, those would be perfect items to buy by the case. Perishable items can also certainly be purchased by the case, but you’ll need to consider how quickly you can consume them. To run with a previous idea, if you have a household of several people and everyone loves yogurt, buying yogurt by the case makes terrific sense. There’s a low risk of waste, since theoretically they’ll be consumed by everyone in the household before they expire; however, if you have a small household and no one is a yogurt fiend, that might not be the case to buy. Purchasing by the case and the case discount can offer tremendous savings and convenience, but only if you’re buying a case you can use up!

From start to finish, our R.E.V. flyer truly sums up our mission as a company – to provide a range of quality, conventional and natural products at prices that result in real savings for our customers, all while featuring Sonoma County front and center. This week, come in and check what’s new with R.E.V., but don’t feel like you have to rush. You do have the next three months, after all!
