New Year’s is one of the most festive holidays of the year. It is a time to get together with friends and family, while enjoying yet another decadent spread of food and a wide range of adult beverages!
Let’s be honest though—sometimes you enjoy just a little bit of food and a few more drinks than you would on a regular night. There’s nothing worse than waking up on New Year’s Day with a hangover. Here at Oliver’s Market, we have rounded up some tips and products to help you start 2017 with a fresh and clear outlook!
The Night Before
Drinking on an empty stomach is universally known as a bad idea. Make sure to eat the right foods and you will be set up for a successful night of indulgence. Foods that are rich in omegas, protein or carbohydrates are all excellent choices. Here are a few of our recommendations—Coho Salmon Fillets with a Raymond’s Sourdough Round and some Rising Moon Organic Pasta.
Prickly Pear Extract
Prickly pear cactus (nopal cactus) is one of the few hangover remedies to have ever undergone clinical testing. Taking 1600IU at least 4 hours before consuming alcohol reduced nausea and dry mouth symptoms by 50%. In the groups that consumed spirits with a darker color, the extract was more effective than if clearer spirits had been consumed. We recommend Health Force Natural’s NoPal Cactus.
Taking a full dose before consuming alcohol, and again in the morning can help you feel better more quickly according to Dr. Prem Chattoo, a gastroenterologist in New York. Borage or Fish Oil
Research shows that hangovers are partially caused by inflammation from prostaglandins, a hormone-like compound made of long chain omega-3 fats. When you take a supplement that inhibits the production of prostaglandins, like borage or fish oil, they work to block inflammatory prostaglandin production while increasing anti-inflammatory prostaglandins. We recommend Jarrow Borage GLA-240 and Wiley’s Finest Peak EPA.
Being inebriated can alter your sleep cycle, thus causing cognitive disruption, leaving you feeling groggy in the morning. Getting as much REM sleep as you can is an excellent way to combat this, so going to sleep as sober as possible is best. Take a moment before hitting the hay to have a hot cup of green tea to calm down your system and get as many antioxidants as possible. We recommend Lipton Green Tea.
The Morning After
It’s common knowledge that alcohol dehydrates the body and that the best way to replenish it is by adding back water content. Plain old water isn’t going to be enough, so adding an electrolyte mix will super charge the delivery of those precious H2O molecules to your system. B vitamins are essential for central nervous function and are easily destroyed by alcohol consumption, so taking them the night before won’t do any good. Your best option is to take a concentrated B Vitamin complex to replenish what you’ve lost. We recommend Irwin Naturals Mega B Complex.
It always feels like liquid calories burn faster than solid ones, right? So, you probably feel like you’re starving. Having a filling, but light, breakfast will help settle your stomach. Mix together some Clover Organic Greek Nonfat Yogurt and some fresh, sweet raspberries.
