If you grocery shop once a week, in five years you’ll have kept about 250 to 2,000 grocery bags out of our landfills. When one ton of plastic bags is reused or recycled, the energy equivalent of 11 barrels of oil is saved! By bringing your own bag to the grocery store, you can save thousands of plastic bags from ending up in landfills, or even worse in ecosystems where they can harm living creatures. A 15 year old tree produces 700 paper bags. If you saved 2,000 bags you would save just under 3 trees.
People often find it difficult to remember their re-usable bags. Two tips for alleviating this issue.
- Purchase a couple extra bags you can leave in your car, this way you can rotate bags in and out.
- Put your reusable bags somewhere visible, preferably somewhere close to your front door, this way you can be reminded on your way out of the house.
