Jeritt Recommends Peacock Farms Honeydew

“Peacock Orange Flesh Honeydews are the highlight of my summer! Pick one that has a yellow skin tone and a waxy texture. I’m sure they will be the highlight of your summer too!”

‘Tis the season to surround yourself with melons. Although available year round, they reach their sweet, nutrient-packed peak of perfection right around now. They are also the least understood of all summer fruits. Did you know that melons are in the same family as cucumbers and squash? They are all members of the gourd family, except most melons are fruits not vegetables and are luscious, sweet, and juicy, each with its own individual personality and appeal.

When the weather is this hot, is there anything better than a slice of ice-cold melon? Indulge yourself in these sweet, summertime essentials this week here at Oliver’s, where our roots are in fresh produce.

So Many Melons…Not Enough Time…

These are melons are uncommon, but oh-so-delicious. Try a new variety today!

  • Galia Melon – : A cantaloupe-honeydew hybrid with delicious smelling pale green flesh. Extra delectable served chilled with a sprinkling of sea salt.
  • Crenshaw Melon – A cross between a casaba and a Persian, this melon comes in both white and green varieties. It is exceptionally luscious, juicy, and a little peppery at its peak; use interchangeably with cantaloupe.
  • Canary Melon – This bright yellow, football-shaped melon is sugary, a little tangy, and somewhat tropical tasting. Great in cold soups or salads, and with herbs such as basil, mint, and cilantro.
  • Sharlyn Melon – A highly perishable variety with a subtle flavor. It’s excellent with tangy ingredients like yogurt or goat cheese.
  • Casaba Melon – The flavor of this wrinkly, ridged gourd recalls cucumber more than melon. With a squeeze of citrus juice, it’s nice in gazpacho or a smoothie.
