The summer season is at its peak, which means one thing – an abundance of fresh produce in our stores. That’s right, our Produce Departments are overflowing with the very best of what summer has to offer.
Sonoma County in particular is a produce wonderland, so this week at Oliver’s Market all local produce is 20% off. To source some of the local produce that we carry, Oliver’s Market works with a business called F.E.E.D. Sonoma. Here you will find everything you need to know about this cool business and how they benefit our local farmers, grocery stores, restaurants and the community.
Farmers Exchange of Earthly Delights Sonoma (F.E.E.D. Sonoma) is a for-profit business that buys cleanly grown agricultural products from small farms throughout Sonoma County and delivers them to local buyers at grocery stores, restaurants, schools and caterers within 24 hours of harvest, insuring only the freshest, top quality produce.
F.E.E.D. Sonoma came about in 2010 when friends Michelle Dubin and Tim Page began to create an exchange that would provide cleanly grown food to their neighbors. This exchange would benefit the farmers by creating new and consistent markets for their products to be sold in. They acquired an existing farmer-owned wholesale operation, Terra Sonoma Produce, which had an excellent reputation for delivering some of the highest quality food in our area.
F.E.E.D. Sonoma knows that food is one of the major components of our existence. So, by supporting local farmers, they’re supporting our local community. This, in turn, gives our community healthy food, and the peace of mind of knowing that we will have healthy food in the future as well.
Here are just a few great examples of the local farms who benefit from working with F.E.E.D. Sonoma:
Front Porch Farm
Front Porch Farm is located to the east of Healdsburg along the Russian River. When it was founded in 2009, the 110 acre property was planted as a vineyard. However, the grapevines were compromised in both quality and health, so they were pulled out. They seeded cover crops and now grow everything from alfalfa and grains to a wide variety of heritage vegetable crops.
New Family Farm
New Family Farm is located near Sebastopol. They combine old-world ethics with new-world practices to operate their farm. Some of the sustainable practices they use include using draft horses instead of motorized equipment to work the land, which reduces their dependence on fossil fuels. Their aim is to preserve our most important resources, such as water, soil, air and community for generations to come.
Farmer Paul Wirtz has been growing a variety of crops in Sonoma for 24 years. He has always followed organic standards on the leased land that he farms. Some of the salad greens he grows include kale, chard and collard. He also grows delicious tomatoes, peppers, squash and melons.
These three farms are just a few examples of the many that benefit from F.E.E.D. Sonoma. Here at Oliver’s Market we like to say “when you support us, we support them,” and when that happens, everyone in our local community benefits. We hope you will spend a little extra time in our Produce Department next time you are shopping, and learn a little more about our commitment to locally grown produce.
