Roxanne Oliva: Box Candy
When I was in the 4th grade, a door-to-door salesman came to our family home in La Habra, CA. He worked for "Milton Mann Music" renting accordions, and selling accordion lessons. I remember hearing him say something to my parents like, "it's more practical than a piano because it's so easy to carry around."
Soon, I was taking accordion lessons, and remember playing a song in front of my class (my first performance!). My accordion days were short lived, but I have always had a soft spot for the old squeeze box...
In 2009, a group of accordion playing ladies got together to create the "Accordion Babes Album and Pin-up Calendar." It's a genius idea: a glossy calendar and each month of the year features a beautifully photographed lady with her accordion. It also comes with a companion CD that has a song by each of the Babes. The accordion artists hail from all over the world, including a few from Northern California. One of the local Babes is the talented Roxanne Oliva.
I first met Roxanne as a member of The Ruminators back in the early 1990's, playing pennywhistle, harp, and percussion along with the accordion. She can seamlessly jump genres playing anything from traditional Celtic music to Worldbeat, and is also a music instructor.
Roxanne's latest project is Box Candy. New accordion tunes played by tasty mix of ensembles and spiced with exotic instruments. Fresh, fun, funky, folkish, free-associative - A gregarious fun-loving accordion pumps it out with wild abandon.
Box Candy is our Oliver's CD Pick of the Week, and can be yours for the low price of $8.99 - available at all 3 Oliver's locations.
Check out Roxanne performing LIVE with the sensational young bassist Josh Fossgreen at our Cotati store on Saturday, August 18 from 3-5PM. You can be squeezing peaches and tomatoes while Roxanne squeezes her accordion!
